An innocent trip to the farmers market brought a big change to our family.
The Cherry Creek Farmers Market in Denver is an awesome farmers market on Saturday mornings. They have beautiful, fresh produce and abundance of gorgeous flowers, plants, pastries (my favorite!), coffee, fresh teas and lots of fresh foods being made there. It was wonderful people watching! While shopping and eating an amazing croissant, I see a shopping cart filled with 3 puppies and the handsome dad walking along beside it.
We have two Standard poodles Fanny, eight, we called her a sub-standard because she is several inches shorter than Lulu, who is five and is her niece. After having a Tibetan Mastiff and an English bulldog, we got a doodle, before they were popular. Doodle was a pound dog and the smartest, sweetest dog we had ever had. Since no one was breeding the doodles we got hooked on the poodles. I love their athleticism, intelligence, the no-shedding part. They are all around great dogs. Our plan was when our son started college in another year, we would get a golden doodle to help us deal with the empty nest.
Well that was before we saw the basket of Italian mastiff puppies. I have never seen one and after talking with the breeder and hearing about their disposition and athleticism (which seems unusual for such a large dog) we became interested in the breed. We talked about them all the way home and immediately went to google to start researching. After many hours online and talking about it for a week, we decided to go see the whole litter and pick out a little girl. Both of our poodles are female and they get along great!
We free feed and they never have had any issues, so we thought a little girl would fit right in. Well we got to the house and she had three full grown Italian Mastiffs (or Corsos) and they were beautiful and very calm and friendly. She had two with cropped ears and one that was not. He was a 9 month old male. After playing with the puppies and observing them for awhile we had to make a decision on the girl. The whole time, four of them were running, playing; Just being fun-loving puppies. One stayed off by himself though. He was larger. His nickname was Tubby and he was an observer and a cuddler. He was also male. It looked like he was going to be the size and look of the 9 month old and after looking and interacting with him I started rethinking the whole girl thing. When I held Tubby and saw what a lover he was it was an easy choice. I will keep you filled in with the joy and challenges of having a baby in my life again. At 10 weeks old he already weighs 22 pounds, so watching the growth will be fun as well!
