The “Cool” of Curling

by Bryan on March 10, 2010

What do you think of this sport?

What do you think of this sport?

As a wrap-up to this year’s Olympics that ended a week or two ago, I’d like to highlight a sport that baffles me.  Curling has somehow grown a fan base by providing an exciting atmosphere filled with pushing a rock, frantic ice sweeping, and a strategy that seems like a convoluted form of frozen shuffleboard . . . cleaning style. Yet more and more people seem to be interested in this sport, the attention that curling gets only seems to grow with each Olympics.  This year I was amazed to see fans decked out in their team’s colors, with painted faces, screaming frantically at all the most crucial points of the match (is that the correct term?).  I even had a couple friends saying how they couldn’t help but get into the sport, even this was said with some sense of shame though!

I watched one the US matches against . . . I don’t even remember now, but I watched for about 45 minutes and I picked up some of the rules and scoring, but I still have much more to learn.  Unfortunately I just don’t know if I can passionately get behind this sport!  Who knows!  Maybe someday especially if they find a way to incorporate swords, body armor, and full contact!  Can you imagine the little sweeper guys going at the ice with their brooms, and then suddenly out of the corner of the screen a big Russian comes hauling by taking out a sweeper!  Now that’s the definition of exciting!  Just a few thoughts for next Winter Olympics!

How to deal with a teenage dog??

by Julie on March 9, 2010

Dogtrick

Haha . . . maybe someday!

Well, our Cane Corso puppy is now in his dog teens.  A dog is considered in his/her teens from 9 months to 1 ½ years. This is the time that most dogs are turned over to shelters.  Why, you ask, it’s for the same reason people get frustrated with their human teens. Your sweet baby no longer pays attention or listens to you like they seemed to do just a couple of weeks ago. But you can’t just turn them over to someone else, not that I could a dog either, but that is a whole different blog. The cute cuddly puppy is gone and replaced by a dog trying to test the waters. Now is the time of staying on the disciplines you have hopefully, started from the early cute stages. Exercise is huge a tired dog is a happy, well behaved dog.

But there are some other great things to do as well. I have joined a tricks class. It engages their minds as well as connects them in the relationship they have with you. Using a clicker and some very extra yummy treats we start with the simple hand touch, step onto boards, boxes, etc. It is not about obedience but taking things they already do and building on that, and turning it into a trick. Romeo loves to use his paws, so when he starts to do that we say “shake” and give him a treat.   So now rather than paw at us, he can sit politely and shake.   Next, I want to get the shake to a wave but that will take more practice. He can do the commando, which is crawling and rolling over, but you need a pretty big area for those long legs. He can turn in a circle and is learning how to walk backwards. He loves to carry things so I am fixing up a bucket handle and we are going to teach him to carry it and build up into putting things in it (yah right) but you never know. The great thing is he and I both have fun, he gets to be with other dogs, but not play with them, which is a real challenge for him.  The best part is that it uses his brain and mentally wears him out. Plus, when you have friends over you bring out the dog and entertain them!

The legendary JoPa (Joe Paterno, coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions football team) recently had a pair of his eyeglasses sell for $9,000 at a charity auction. The lucky couple? Kevin and Michelle Coppola. Now they will spend the next 7 months panhandling with the glasses on, to pay it off. [...]

Fitting In: New Puma Phone

February 16, 2010

Puma just introduced a new product into their product line . . . a smart phone! When I first heard about it I figured it would be some hack job phone resulting from a misdirected attempt at crossing into a new sales market. As I looked at the latest news on this new [...]

Just the Right Amount of Dark

February 10, 2010

I’d like to jump off the topic of Green, to something a little bit more random in this post.  This morning I brought in my desk lamp to use here at work, in the mornings. I love to leave my lights off in the office but have a small desk lamp light on. When PJ, [...]

Super Bowl Commercials with a Green Tint

February 8, 2010

Reports just came out that this year’s Super Bowl set the record for the largest TV audience of any show, over 106 million, beating out the M.A.S.H. finale!  Now of that 106 million maybe 25 million actually watched the entire game while the remaining 81 million were there for the friends, food, beer, and of course commercials.  [...]

Recycled Condoms: When Going Green Has Gone Too Far!

February 2, 2010

I know this is an old story, but YIKES! I just heard about this. Apparently folks in China have taken the recycle wagon down a dusty road that seems a little too backwoods for me! They are recycling used condoms and making cheap hairbands with them!
Not only is the concept a little disgusting, but health [...]
